An insightful glimpse into the cruelty and complexity of teen life wrapped in a supernatural blanket of horror and despair.

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a teen girl who is relentlessly bullied by her classmates and by her extremist, religious mother. After an incident at school in which Carrie begins menstruating and, having never learned about what is happening to her, believes she is bleeding to death prompts the other girls to taunt her to the point she gets so upset a light bulb bursts symbolising the power which lay inside her… and she is vengeful.

‘Carrie’ operates on many levels and succeeds. It is a close look into how cruel children can be especially at a particularly difficulty time in life and uses this cruelty as a driving device to push Carrie’s story forward in a very natural way. It uses the supernatural elements of the telepathic powers Carrie possesses to reflect her inner feelings of what is happening around her so even though she is capable of destruction it’s hard given what we see her endure not to feel her actions are justified (at least in her mind).

This film is a perfect balance of drama, horror, thriller and supernatural which builds up into possibly one of the most memorable scenes in movie history. Carrie is, by far, one of the best movie adaptations of Stephen King’s work and perfectly hits every mark. An absolute must see especially over the Halloween period. In fact, I’d even say it was one of the greatest movies of all time!
