Regarded by some as a weak link in the long running Marvel chain, this sequel goes bigger and bolder… and it pays off.

Our heroes (Quill, Rocket, Groot, Drax and Gamora) since the events of Volume 1 have built up a reputation for themselves as ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy) and are tasked with the protection of some ancient batteries in exchange for Gamora’s sister Nebula. After Rocket, a talking raccoon, steals some batteries for himself our heroes are forced to flee and soon crash land on a strange planet that just might hold the answers to Quill’s heritage.

Ok so if you’re here for the story then that may well be where others feel let down as it is rather thin on the ground. That being said there are some MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movies you watch for the story while others are very much carried by the charisma of the characters and that is exactly where GOTG2 gets you.

The utter chemistry between the core cast is undeniably magical. There’s a wonderful balance between serious, silly and naive which really helps the movie spark. Like director James Gunn’s first offering the visual aesthetic is stunning and really brings the world these character’s inhabit come to life.

I would certainly recommend watching the first film beforehand, although it’s not essential, as it gives a better depth to our heroes and the events that lead them to each other. While this is not everyone’s favourite Marvel offering this movie has it all for me. It is a lush blend of action, comedy and a more serious tone which switch seamlessly to culminate in a offering of cosmic energy that ellipses it’s predecessor held together by yet another very recognisable soundtrack.

Watching this again has certainly reignited my excitement for the next phase of the MCU. A must watch.
