Brilliant actually…

“Love Actually” is an often overlooked Christmas film. The kind that’s playing in the background in people’s homes but when it comes to naming classic Christmas movies rarely gets a mention – and that’s a shame, because it’s a fun heartfelt intertwined story that deserves a chance.

The film uses an ensemble cast to tell several overlapping stories on the run up to Christmas including…:

The Prime Minister, ‘David’ played by the ever charming Hugh Grant who finds love in his newly appointed staff member at downing street played by Martine McCutcheon. Everyone’s favourite rockstar ‘Billy Mack’ (Bill Nighy) promoting his new single with the help of his manager Joe (Gregor Fisher). A love triangle between two newly weds and the groom’s best friend.

A recently widowed step-dad trying to navigate solo parenting played by the amazing Liam Neeson and numerous other characters stories including acting talents from the late Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson whose paths all cross seamlessly thanks to the amazing writing and directing talents of veteran British comedy writer Richard Curtis.

The movie runs along nicely and manages to give every character a balanced amount of time to shine showing just enough of each story to keep you engaged until they reappear on screen without over doing it. I don’t know why this film doesn’t get the appreciation it deserves. It’s clever, heartfelt to the point of ‘cheesy’ and the busy festive London makes for a magical backdrop.

Definitely worth a watch even if it’s only over the festive period.
