So it’s that time of year when the shops are packed, its freezing cold outside and there’s nothing like curling up on the sofa with a good Christmas movie… The problem is, I’m not a fan of Christmas movies.
It isn’t therefore a surprise that when my son chose to watch “Nativity!” on Netflix, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. It turns out he was shown the movie in school and he liked it, so now I had to watch it.
“Nativity!” is a film about Paul, a primary school teacher who isn’t the most cheerful of people and that only gets worse during the festive season. You see, Paul proposed to the love of his life at Christmas and that love of his life turned him down at Christmas, so now Paul is always miserable at Christmas.
Well if Christmas wasn’t bad enough for Paul, it’s only going to get worse as his boss has put him in charge of this years nativity play. After reluctantly agreeing, Paul and his completely useless teaching assistant Mr Poppy are buying a Christmas and bump into a teacher from a rival school who are very competitive when it comes to the festive play. During this conversation Paul tells a little fib that his ex girlfriend (remember her?) moved to Hollywood and is working on a movie deal for his yet to be written Christmas production. unfortunately Mr Poppy overhears paul and proceeds to tell the whole school that Hollywood is coming to town and everybody’s going to be famous.
What follows is a movie about a group of kids coming together to put on the show of their lives and a moral story that you shouldn’t lie because it will come back to bite you in the bottom.
Paul is played perfectly by Martin Freeman who is well versed at playing it straight in films such as The Hobbit and TV Shows such as Sherlock and Fargo, but also well-known for comedies such as The Good Night amongst others.
As you can imagine with a film like this the stars of the show are the kids who help make this film pretty funny but I found that most of the laughs come from Marc Wootton who plays Mr Poppy. I’ve never seen him before but his character made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion.
“Nativity!” was a film we started watching because my son wanted to watch it but if I’m honest, we finished watching it because I was enjoying it so much.
If you are looking for a good, funny, Christmas movie this holiday season, You won’t go far wrong if you load up Netflix and select “Nativity!”.
