Lars von Trier is known for his Avant-garde film making so when I originally saw the trailer for this movie back in 2013 I knew, simply by the name of the director, that this could be somewhat different. What intrigued me was with the obvious subject of sex along with a Hollywood cast, how controversial could it be? The answer…? Very.
This film is not for the light-hearted. The film begins with elderly bachelor Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) discovering a beaten woman laying in a snowy alley way. That woman is Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) a self-confessed nymphomaniac. He takes Joe back to his home to help her recover and over the next 2 plus hours she begins to recant her life with vivid detail.
From realising at a VERY early age that she was different and had sexual tendencies, to stories of her and a friend competing with each other on how many men they could sleep with. The Prize? A bag of candy.
The film is broken up into chapters, chapters of her life and also a way for Seligman to analyse and question Joe’s motives and actions. Nymphomaniac IS interesting and it IS worth a watch but as I said before this film is not for the light-hearted and it actually surprised me how much was ‘Shown’ in a mainstream Hollywood movie. Of course nothing is actually shown, most things are insinuated and anything you do see is likely not real.
With a cast also including Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Shia LaBeouf and others the cast is full of great actors and the acting is pretty good even if the story line is a little strange. For example the scene with Uma Thurman felt long and out of place but its an important scene as it illustrates the consequences of Joe’s actions.
Should you watch this film? If you’re into experimental film making, or just want to watch famous people have sex then this movie is for you. If you’re looking for a nice romantic film for couples you’re probably better looking elsewhere.
The film was originally 5 hours long and has been split into two. Nymphomaniac: Volume II is already available on Netflix to watch. I haven’t got round to it yet but when I do be assured there will be a review for that too. In the mean time, if you watch either Part I or Part II, let me know what you think in the comments below.
