For those that have read my previous reviews such as The Frozen Ground and Pain & Gain, know that I love me a true story; so when trying to think of a good horror film to review, I couldn’t pass up the chance to re-watch The Amityville Horror.

The Amityville Horror tells the supposedly true story of the Lutz family who buy a house they have always dreamed of at a price they couldn’t resist. While buying the house the real estate agent explains to them that the reason for the bargain price is that the previous family who lived there were brutally murdered by a member of their own family. Undeterred, the new family consisting of George (Ryan Reynolds), Kathy (Melissa George) and her three children from a previous marriage played by Jesse James, Jimmy Bennett and Chloë Grace Moretz.

The film depicts the first 28 days after the Lutz family move in. The first event that occurred was that Chelsea (Chloë Grace Moretz) started having little chats to a little girl called Jodie. Kathy puts this down to her daughter inventing an invisible friend as a way to settle in to her new surroundings but when this new friend convinces Chelsea to take a walk on the roof and jump, it’s time to worry.

In the original story, the killer believed he began to hear voices who convinced him that his fellow family members were going to kill him and it doesn’t take long for those voices to return.

The Amityville Horror is a ‘by-the-book’ horror movie. It has jumps, tension and of course its fair share of blood. This remake of the original from 1979 isn’t going to make you question the existence of an afterlife, but it will entertain you while you’re cuddled up on the sofa. Just be sure you have a few cushions around to hide behind. If the film itself isn’t scary enough for you, maybe how young Chloë Grace Moretz. is in this movie or how much of the movie Ryan Reynolds spends shirtless is enough to make you sleep with the lights on…….VERY SCARY.

  1. We watched this last night and enjoyed it. I might be a wimp, but I definitely needed a cushion to hide behind!! As far as remakes go, this one seemed pretty good and I now want to hunt out the documentary from a couple of years ago from the guy who survived the so-called true story….
