Netflix has started to get some great movies lately that would do well as a cinematic release, “Bright“, and “Gerald’s Game” to name just two, so when I saw the trailer for “The Open House” I thought this would be a movie of the same calibre, boy was I disappointed!

“The Open House” stars “13 Reason’s Why” lead Dylan Minnette, as the lead protagonist and his acting is as brilliant in this as it is in “13 Reasons Why” in fact all the acting in “The Open House” is fantastic.

As the film starts it shows some great potential, and the story promises so much; unfortunately, it fails to deliver on its promise at all. The plot has been done hundreds of times before, A family suffers a terrible tragedy and moves into a new neighbourhood. The town has several creepy and odd individuals that talk about the house the family is moving into. After settling into the house that’s up for sale, they begin to experience odd things that terrorise them, and the police think that it’s just some kids trying to scare the newcomers. At times it feels like you must have caught rewind on the remote control because we see the same things happening in a loop, as we don’t do spoilers I won’t say exactly what is looped. There are also so many plotholes and things that are mentioned which have never been referred to before as you don’t really get a backstory, like why is there tension between Logan and his Mum, and why does his mum tell him that his Dad never cared about them anyway when there is no indicator of this in the film previously.

In all honesty, this is one of those films where if you watch the 5-minute trailer then you see all the best bits of it, and I don’t recommend that you watch it. In fact to quote a friend on Facebook: “We watched that a few weeks ago. I fell asleep two thirds in. I think that says it all.
